What is a Sys Admin
A system administrator is someone who administrates or maintains a system.
This can range from maintaining a group of PCs to maintaining clusters of servers.
Sys Admins are the ones that are called in when there are problems.
99% of the time users of those systems don’t think or care about their sys admin.
The sys admin has to deal with those users who are having a ‘bad day’, when ‘nothing’ is working and it’s all the sys admins fault.
I remember every time I used to walk into one particular office, the office manager would shout out loud “Oh no, are you going to stop me working again?”
This to me sums up why sys admins need a day to be appreciated.
We don’t try to stop people working.
We don’t want to be the ones that have to asks users to log off so that we can install patches on the file server.
And we especially don’t want to be up until three AM trying to restore the mail server from back ups because the manager thought that it would be a good idea for his teenage son to learn how to ‘do’ computers the day before.
All we ask is that on the last Friday of July, users try to think and appreciate the sys admin who is working hard behind the scenes to keep everything running.
